Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Have You Been Screened?

NH program offers free breast cancer screenings to eligible women.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month dedicated to promoting the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

"Let No Woman Be Overlooked," a program of the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings to women who meet screening guidelines, live in New Hampshire, are between the ages of 21-64, are uninsured or underinsured, and have a limited income.

“Early detection through breast cancer screening is a priority in NH and at the Division of Public Health Services,” said Public Health Director Dr. José Montero. “It’s important that women talk with their health care provider and schedule regular mammograms. Regular screenings can help detect cancer at an early stage when it might be more easily treated. Currently in New Hampshire there are more than 25 health facilities that offer free mammograms through the Let No Women Be Overlooked Program.”

From July 2011 through June 2012, the Let No Woman Be Overlooked, Breast and Cervical Cancer Program enrolled more than 4,600 women for free screening mammograms and diagnostic services. Since screening began in 1997, the BCCP has screened more than 25,000 women. Having regular mammograms, following national screening guidelines, can detect breast cancer at an early stage, and lead to an easier course of treatment.

Many women are not aware that if they meet the age and income criteria they can receive free breast and cervical cancer screening in New Hampshire through the Let No Woman Be Overlooked Program.
